What should you know about the GE MAC ECG machine?

The tracing can provide information about heart rate, rhythm, and the way electrical impulses travel through the heart. It may be requested for palpitations, chest symptoms, breathlessness, dizziness, fainting, or monitoring of a known heart condition. A normal-looking tracing does not explain every cause of symptoms, and an automated machine interpretation should be checked by a clinician.

You may be asked to remove items that cover the electrode sites and lie quietly. The clinician attaches electrodes to the chest and limbs, asks you to relax, and records the signal while you remain still and avoid talking. Tell them if you have sensitive skin or feel uncomfortable. Bring a list of medicines and mention any recent episodes of racing or irregular heartbeat.

Call emergency services for severe or ongoing chest pain, major difficulty breathing, collapse, or a new neurological change such as facial drooping or weakness on one side. Palpitations with fainting, severe dizziness, or chest discomfort also need urgent assessment. Arrange routine follow-up for less urgent symptoms rather than relying on a device reading alone.

Ask why the ECG was chosen, whether the recording captured the symptoms you described, and when you will receive the clinician’s interpretation. If episodes come and go, ask whether longer monitoring or another test would be more informative.
