What should you know about the GE MAC 5500 HD ECG machine?

An ECG can help assess the heart rate, rhythm, and timing of electrical signals. It may support evaluation of palpitations, chest discomfort, breathlessness, dizziness, fainting, or a suspected rhythm problem. The machine produces a tracing; it does not by itself explain every symptom or confirm a diagnosis. Movement, muscle tension, loose electrodes, or poor skin contact can affect the recording.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and lower limbs. Tell the clinician about medicines, implanted cardiac devices, recent symptoms, and whether you feel faint when lying flat. You usually rest still for a short recording while the electrodes are attached. The procedure does not send electricity into your body, although removing adhesive electrodes may mildly irritate the skin.

Seek emergency help for chest pressure or pain that is severe, persistent, or spreading, especially with sweating, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, or marked weakness. Urgent assessment is also needed for fainting with ongoing palpitations, severe breathing difficulty, or new one-sided weakness. Do not wait for a routine ECG appointment if these symptoms are happening now.

Ask what prompted the ECG, whether the tracing was technically clear, and what the clinician noticed about your rhythm. You can also ask whether you need a repeat ECG, an ambulatory monitor, blood tests, or another assessment, and which symptoms should prompt immediate help.
