What should you know about GE 12-channel ECG machines?

Small adhesive electrodes placed on the chest and limbs detect electrical signals. The machine prints or displays waveforms that represent heart rate, rhythm, and the timing of electrical conduction. Twelve channels provide simultaneous views, which can help a clinician recognise patterns that need further assessment. The device records information; it does not itself confirm a diagnosis.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, ankles, and wrists. Tell the clinician about medicines, implanted devices, skin sensitivity, or chest hair that may affect electrode placement. Rest quietly before and during the recording, keep still, and breathe normally unless instructed otherwise. The electrodes are removed after the tracing, and mild skin redness can occur briefly.

An ECG appointment should not delay emergency help. Seek urgent medical care for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, or a new fast or irregular heartbeat with weakness or dizziness. If symptoms are happening during testing, tell the clinician immediately so they can assess you and arrange appropriate care.

Ask why the ECG was requested, whether you need to avoid any medicine or activity beforehand, when the tracing will be reviewed, and whether symptoms require another test or follow-up.
