What should you know about a GE 1.5T MRI scanner?

The scanner’s magnetic field aligns hydrogen atoms in the body. Radio waves then change that alignment, and the returning signals are processed into images. The 1.5T label describes the field strength. The scanner can produce images in multiple planes and may show soft tissues clearly, which helps clinicians assess organs, nerves, muscles, and some tumours. The machine makes loud knocking sounds and requires you to remain still.

Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, implanted devices, metal fragments, clips, medication patches, kidney problems, pregnancy, or a history of claustrophobia. Remove metal items before entering the scanner room. Some examinations use contrast through a vein; the team will decide whether it is appropriate and explain preparation. During the scan, you can communicate with staff and may receive hearing protection.

Tell staff immediately if you feel burning, pain, dizziness, breathing trouble, or sudden distress during the examination. After contrast, seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, or faintness. Contact the imaging service about a spreading rash or other new reaction. A routine ache after lying still is different from severe or worsening symptoms and should also be discussed.
