Gaviscon for indigestion: what to know

Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, can cause upper-abdominal discomfort, fullness, bloating, belching, or burning. Gaviscon works mainly at the top of the stomach: its ingredients can create a floating layer over stomach contents, while some versions also neutralise acid. This can reduce reflux reaching the throat or food pipe, but it does not identify or remove the underlying cause.

Repeated symptoms can occur with acid reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or other digestive conditions. Indigestion may also need assessment if it is persistent, changing, or accompanied by warning symptoms.

Follow the dose, timing, and maximum daily amount on the exact product label. Liquid and chewable preparations are used differently, and some need shaking or chewing thoroughly. Keep other medicines separate if the label or pharmacist advises this, because antacid ingredients can affect how some medicines are absorbed.

Smaller meals, avoiding food close to bedtime, and staying upright after eating may reduce reflux-related discomfort. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using Gaviscon regularly, during pregnancy, or if you have kidney disease, heart failure, or need to limit salt.

Seek urgent medical help for chest pain with sweating, breathlessness, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. Get prompt medical advice for vomiting blood, black stools, trouble swallowing, repeated vomiting, severe or worsening abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss.

Arrange a medical review if indigestion keeps returning, does not settle with short-term self-care, or begins later in life. A clinician may ask about medicines, alcohol, meals, reflux symptoms, and bowel changes before deciding whether tests or a different treatment are needed.

Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux or another cause, how long you should try Gaviscon, and whether it can be taken with your regular medicines. Mention any difficulty swallowing, persistent nausea, abdominal tenderness, or symptoms that wake you at night.
