Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone caused when acidic stomach contents irritate the food pipe. Gaviscon is an alginate-based antacid product; the liquid is swallowed and can act locally in the stomach. It may ease symptoms after meals or when lying down, but it does not identify or remove the reason reflux is happening. Repeated symptoms can occur with acid reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or other digestive problems.

Read the product label and follow the dose and timing given there, because formulations differ. Shake a liquid bottle if the label instructs you to do so, and use the measuring device supplied.
