Gaviscon creates a barrier that helps stop stomach contents moving upwards. It may soothe burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid in the mouth, or discomfort after meals or when lying down. Relief after taking it does not prove the pain is from reflux. Chest discomfort can also occur with Angina, gastritis, a peptic ulcer, panic disorder, pneumonia, shingles, or a pulmonary embolism.

If the sensation is familiar, mild, and clearly linked with reflux, follow the product instructions and ask a pharmacist about interactions with your medicines. Avoid lying down soon after eating and note triggers such as large meals or spicy foods. Do not use repeated doses to mask unexplained or recurring chest pain.
