Gaviscon may ease a cough when acid reflux is irritating the throat, but it will not treat cough caused by infection, allergy, asthma or lung disease.

The reflux connection

Reflux can reach the upper throat and irritate tissues, causing a dry cough, throat clearing, hoarseness or a sour taste. Cough related to reflux may be worse after meals or when lying down, but this pattern is not proof of the cause. A cough can also accompany a common cold, acute bronchitis, allergic rhinitis or asthma. The treatment depends on the underlying cause rather than the sound of the cough alone.

Avoid lying down soon after eating, consider smaller meals, and note whether particular foods trigger symptoms. Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing blood, sudden chest pain, or a cough after choking.
