Can Gaviscon cause constipation?

Some antacid ingredients can slow bowel movements or make stools firmer. Constipation may mean passing stools less often, straining, or passing hard, lumpy stools. Constipation does not automatically show that Gaviscon is the cause. Conditions such as [Hypothyroidism](/conditions/hypothyroidism/) or irritable bowel syndrome can also change bowel habits.

Check the exact formulation and use only the labelled amount. Drink fluids regularly if you have not been told to restrict them, add fibre gradually, and keep moving if you feel well enough. A pharmacist can suggest an alternative reflux treatment or a suitable bowel treatment after checking your medicines and medical history. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, blood in the stool, or black stools.
