Gallstones in the bile duct: what to know

The bile duct carries bile from the liver and gallbladder to the intestine. A stone lodged there can cause pressure and prevent normal drainage. Some people develop colicky upper abdominal pain, while others notice dark urine, pale stools, itching or yellowing of the eyes. Fever may suggest infection. A duct stone can also affect the nearby pancreatic outlet; [Pancreatitis](/conditions/pancreatitis/) is one possible complication.

Contact a clinician promptly and describe pain location, urine or stool changes, fever, vomiting and previous gallstone episodes. Blood tests can assess liver and pancreatic irritation, while ultrasound or other imaging may show stones or widened ducts. A specialist procedure may be needed to clear a stone, with later discussion of gallbladder treatment. A combination of pain and fever can signal infection around the obstruction and should not be managed by waiting at home.

Ask where the stone is, whether bile flow is obstructed, which tests are planned, whether infection is suspected, and what symptoms mean you should attend hospital immediately.
