How the structures involved in Gallstones differ from normal

Short answer

Gallstones in the bile duct can obstruct bile flow and cause upper abdominal pain, jaundice, infection or pancreatitis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location
The duct carrying bile to the intestine
Possible symptoms
Pain, jaundice, dark urine or vomiting
Tests
Blood tests and biliary imaging

Understanding the location

The bile duct carries bile from the liver and gallbladder to the intestine. A stone lodged there can cause pressure and prevent normal drainage. Some people develop colicky upper abdominal pain, while others notice dark urine, pale stools, itching or yellowing of the eyes. Fever may suggest infection. A duct stone can also affect the nearby pancreatic outlet; [Pancreatitis](/conditions/pancreatitis/) is one possible complication.

Arrange an assessment

Contact a clinician promptly and describe pain location, urine or stool changes, fever, vomiting and previous gallstone episodes. Blood tests can assess liver and pancreatic irritation, while ultrasound or other imaging may show stones or widened ducts. A specialist procedure may be needed to clear a stone, with later discussion of gallbladder treatment. Start with a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) if symptoms are not severe.

Get urgent help for red flags

Seek urgent care for severe or persistent [Abdominal Pain](/symptoms/abdominal-pain/), fever, chills, yellow skin or eyes, confusion, faintness or repeated [Vomiting](/symptoms/vomiting/). A combination of pain and fever can signal infection around the obstruction and should not be managed by waiting at home.

What to ask

Ask where the stone is, whether bile flow is obstructed, which tests are planned, whether infection is suspected, and what symptoms mean you should attend hospital immediately.

Questions people ask

Is a bile duct stone the same as a gallbladder stone?

It is made of the same type of material, but its location differs: the bile duct connects the gallbladder and liver to the intestine.

Can indigestion be the only symptom?

[Indigestion](/symptoms/indigestion/) can occur, but it is non-specific; a clinician should interpret it with your other symptoms.
