Gallbladder and loss of appetite: what to know

Short answer
Gallbladder disease can reduce appetite when pain or nausea is present, but loss of appetite alone has many possible causes and needs context.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Gallbladder clues
- Upper-abdominal pain, nausea, fever, or yellowing may occur alongside appetite loss.
- Useful record
- Track food and fluid intake, weight change, pain, fever, and bowel or urine changes.
What reduced appetite can mean
Gallbladder inflammation or a blocked bile duct may cause upper-abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, or yellowing of the eyes and skin, making food unappealing. Reduced appetite also occurs with viral infections such as influenza, COVID-19, gastroenteritis, and hepatitis A. Gastritis and peptic ulcers can cause early fullness or discomfort, while depression can affect eating without a primary digestive problem.
The duration, associated symptoms, hydration, and any unintentional weight change help a clinician judge how quickly you need review. Do not assume that appetite loss points to one organ.
What you can do now
Take small, frequent meals if large portions feel difficult, choose nourishing foods you tolerate, and sip fluids regularly. Note pain, nausea, bowel changes, fever, urine and stool colour, medicines, and how much you are eating. Arrange a medical appointment if appetite remains low, keeps returning, or is accompanied by weight loss or ongoing digestive symptoms.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, confusion, faintness, signs of dehydration, high fever, blood in vomit or stool, or yellow skin or eyes. Prompt assessment is also needed if appetite loss is accompanied by progressive weakness or unexplained weight change.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be reducing your appetite, whether your medicines or recent illness are contributing, which examination or tests are appropriate, and how to maintain hydration and nutrition safely.
