What should you know about gait and motion analysis?

Short answer
Gait and motion analysis studies how the feet, legs, hips, and trunk coordinate during movement to inform personalised care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The parts of the assessment
Gait refers to the way you walk or run; motion analysis looks more broadly at joint movement, timing, balance, and coordination. A clinician may observe you at rest and during movement, compare both sides, and relate findings to pain, stiffness, weakness, previous injury, or a change in activity. Technology can measure movement or foot pressure, but a measurement is not automatically a problem. Its meaning depends on what you can do, what you feel, and what the examination shows.
[3D Motion Capture](/technology/3d-motion-capture/) can provide detailed movement data. A [Pressure Plate Gait Scanner](/technology/pressure-plate-gait-scanner/) can describe how forces are distributed under the feet.
Turning observations into a plan
Before the visit, record the activity that brings on symptoms and any recent change in footwear, workload, or surface. During the assessment, describe what feels different rather than trying to move in a way you think looks correct. A plan may include mobility work, strength and balance exercises, activity pacing, technique coaching, or [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/). The aim is to improve useful function and confidence, not to chase a single ideal pattern.
When to seek care promptly
Get clinical advice when a new gait change persists, pain restricts daily activity, or repeated symptoms follow exercise. Seek urgent care after a major injury if you cannot bear weight, or if you develop new weakness, progressive numbness, marked swelling, or a visible deformity. These concerns need direct assessment rather than movement analysis alone.
Questions worth asking
Ask which findings are actionable, which are normal variation, and how they relate to your symptoms. Clarify the first exercise or activity change to try, how to progress it, and what outcome will show that the plan is helping.

Questions people ask
Is a different-looking gait always abnormal?
No. Movement varies between people, and a finding matters when it fits symptoms, function, or a specific clinical concern.
What should I bring to the assessment?
Bring usual footwear and a clear description of symptoms, activities, recent changes, and your goals.
