What should runners know about gait analysis?

Short answer

Runners should know that gait analysis examines movement patterns, loading, and control to guide individual training or rehabilitation decisions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a runner’s gait analysis can show

A clinician may watch your walking and running, compare the two sides, and assess foot placement, knee control, hip movement, trunk position, and the way your foot meets the ground. The assessment is most useful when matched with your symptoms, training history, footwear, strength, and recent changes in mileage or terrain. It does not label one running style as universally correct. Instead, it helps identify movements that may be relevant to a particular pain pattern or performance goal.

A pressure-plate gait scanner can add information about how pressure moves under the feet. [3D Motion Capture](/technology/3d-motion-capture/) can measure movement in more detail, while a [Pressure Plate Gait Scanner](/technology/pressure-plate-gait-scanner/) focuses on foot loading.

How to prepare and use the findings

Bring the shoes you train in, note when discomfort starts, and describe the sessions that provoke it. Wear clothing that allows the legs and hips to be seen. During testing, run at a pace that resembles your usual activity and tell the clinician if the speed or incline changes your symptoms. The next step might be a graded strength plan, a technique experiment, a training adjustment, or [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/). Any change should be introduced gradually and judged by symptoms and function rather than by a single visual feature.

When to seek clinical care

Arrange an assessment if recurring pain changes your stride, limits training, or returns whenever activity increases. Seek prompt medical care for an inability to bear weight, a visibly deformed limb, sudden major swelling after an injury, new weakness, or numbness that is spreading. Gait analysis is not a substitute for evaluating an acute injury or a medical problem affecting nerves, joints, or circulation.

Questions to ask

Ask which movement findings relate to your symptoms, what alternatives were considered, and which change should come first. You can also ask how to monitor training load, what signs mean you should stop an exercise, and when a repeat assessment would be useful.

Questions people ask

Does gait analysis tell every runner to change technique?

No. Findings need to be interpreted alongside symptoms, goals, and the demands of your training.

Can gait analysis help with running pain?

It can help a clinician identify movement and loading patterns to consider within a broader assessment.
