What should you know about Fybogel and diverticulitis?

Fybogel contains ispaghula husk, a fibre that absorbs water and forms a softer, bulkier stool. It may be recommended for constipation or bowel regularity when diverticular disease is settled. Diverticulitis is inflammation of a diverticulum and can cause persistent lower abdominal pain, fever, nausea or a change in bowel habit. Fibre can produce bloating, and taking a bulk-forming product without enough fluid may worsen constipation or cause blockage, particularly if the bowel is narrowed.

If a clinician has advised Fybogel, mix each dose with plenty of water and drink it promptly, following the product directions. Keep other medicines separate when advised because fibre can affect how some medicines are absorbed. Do not start it to manage new severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fever or marked bloating without medical guidance. Increase fibre gradually when appropriate, and discuss fluids, diet and recurrent symptoms with a GP or nutrition professional.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fever with pain, inability to pass stool or gas, fainting, or blood in the stool. Arrange a GP review for persistent constipation, recurrent pain or symptoms that do not improve after the advised plan.
