What should you know about fungal dandruff?

Dandruff can involve flakes, itch, and scalp irritation when skin cells shed more visibly. Yeast that normally lives on skin may contribute to inflammation in some people, particularly in oilier scalp areas. Seborrheic dermatitis can cause a similar pattern and may also affect the eyebrows, ears, or sides of the nose. Ring-shaped patches, broken hairs, thick crusts, or areas of hair loss suggest that a different fungal infection or another scalp condition needs examination.

Use a medicated shampoo only as directed, allowing it to contact the scalp for the recommended time before rinsing. Avoid scratching, harsh fragranced products, and sharing combs, hats, or towels while the cause is being assessed. A clinician may choose a topical antifungal treatment when yeast or another fungus is suspected. Photographing the scalp in similar lighting can help you describe whether scaling, redness, or hair loss is changing.

Arrange prompt review for painful swelling, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, tender lumps, or patchy hair loss. Seek assessment when flakes are accompanied by thick plaques, sores, or involvement of the eyes. If symptoms persist despite correct shampoo use or return repeatedly, the diagnosis may need reconsideration rather than stronger products chosen without advice.

Ask whether the pattern fits dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, or another infection; how often to use the recommended shampoo; and whether a scraping or culture is useful. Ask what symptoms should prompt an earlier review.
