What should you know about fully healed skin graft?

Healing means the grafted surface has closed and is no longer an open wound, with no ongoing drainage or areas that are separating. The graft may still look different from nearby skin: it can be lighter, darker, smoother, shinier, firmer, or less sensitive. The donor site may also have a visible mark. Numbness, tingling, tightness, or altered sweating can persist as nerves and scar tissue settle. A healed graft is living skin, but it may not have the same flexibility, hair, or protective qualities as the original area.

Keep the area moisturised if your surgical team recommends it, and protect it from friction, stretching, and direct sun. Use the advised sunscreen or clothing once the surface is ready. Check the graft and donor site regularly for cracks, rubbing, colour change, or new tenderness. Do not massage a scar, use silicone, or begin laser treatment until the clinician confirms that the timing and method are suitable. Gentle movement or scar therapy may help function when prescribed, especially near a joint.

Contact your surgical team for new breakdown, bleeding, drainage, increasing warmth, spreading redness, swelling, pain, or an unpleasant smell. A sudden colour change, rapidly enlarging blister, fever, or loss of movement also needs prompt assessment. Seek urgent care for severe swelling, breathing difficulty, or symptoms suggesting a serious allergic reaction.
