Full field digital mammography uses electronic detectors to capture breast X-ray images for screening and diagnostic assessment. The images can be displayed and reviewed digitally, while the breast is compressed briefly to reduce movement and spread tissue. A mammogram is an imaging test, not a complete explanation of every breast change.

During the examination, each breast is positioned on the detector and compressed for an exposure. The detector converts X-rays into an electronic image that the radiology team reviews. Digital mammography differs from film-based imaging because images are stored and viewed electronically. If tissue overlap or a particular finding needs more detail, the team may recommend focused views, breast ultrasound, MRI, or three-dimensional methods such as breast tomosynthesis.

Tell the imaging service about pregnancy possibility, implants, previous breast procedures, or a current lump or discharge. On the day, follow local instructions about deodorant, powder, and creams. Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up. Compression can feel firm for a short time; tell the radiographer if positioning causes significant pain. Bring details of earlier breast imaging when requested so the radiologist can compare changes.

Seek clinical advice for a new breast lump, persistent focal pain, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, a new nipple inversion, or a change in breast size or shape. Do not rely on a previous normal mammogram to assess a new symptom. Imaging can support assessment for breast cancer, but the next step may depend on examination and additional tests.
