What should you know about full body aches?

Short answer
Full-body aches can follow an infection, exertion, poor sleep, or another health condition, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms guide what to do next.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanations
Viral illnesses such as influenza or COVID-19 commonly present with body aches alongside other symptoms. Dengue fever and malaria can also present with aches, particularly after relevant travel or mosquito exposure. Persistent widespread pain may occur with fibromyalgia, while low thyroid activity can cause muscle discomfort and fatigue. Brucellosis is another possibility after contact with infected animals or unpasteurised dairy.
What you can do
Rest, drink fluids, and use gentle movement if it does not increase pain. Record when the aches began, where they are felt, temperature changes, recent exercise, travel, insect bites, and sick contacts. Take only pain relief that is suitable for you and follow the label; ask a pharmacist if you have a chronic condition, take other medicines, or might be pregnant. Avoid strenuous exercise until the cause is clearer.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, severe weakness, dark urine, inability to keep fluids down, or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange medical review for persistent aches, recurrent fever, unexplained weight change, or symptoms after travel. A clinician can decide whether examination or blood tests are needed.
Questions for your doctor
Tell your doctor about the onset, severity, affected areas, fever, medicines, recent activity, travel, animal contact, and other symptoms. Ask which causes fit the pattern, whether testing is needed, and which changes should prompt urgent reassessment.

Questions people ask
Do body aches always mean an infection?
No. Infection is one explanation, but exertion, sleep disruption, fibromyalgia, and thyroid problems can also contribute.
Should I exercise with full-body aches?
Choose rest and gentle movement only if comfortable, and pause strenuous activity while symptoms are unexplained or worsening.
