A Fujifilm mammography machine creates breast X-ray images by compressing the breast briefly between imaging plates. The system records images for a radiographer and radiologist to review. The brand describes the equipment; your care still depends on why the mammogram was requested, the images obtained, and the clinical assessment.

Compression spreads breast tissue so structures can be seen more clearly and helps keep the breast still during exposure. A digital system sends images to a workstation for review. Some services use three-dimensional methods such as breast tomosynthesis, which gathers images from different angles; this is different from a standard two-dimensional view. A mammogram can help investigate a symptom or screen for changes, but an image cannot by itself establish every diagnosis.

Tell the imaging team if you might be pregnant, have breast implants, or have a new breast symptom. Avoid deodorant, powder, or cream on the breasts and underarms on the day if your centre advises this, because particles can affect images. You will undress from the waist up. Each breast is positioned and compressed for images; speak up if positioning is difficult or the pressure is not tolerable. Further imaging may include ultrasound, MRI, or three-dimensional mammography when clinically appropriate.

Contact a clinician promptly for a new lump, bloody nipple discharge, a nipple that turns inward newly, skin dimpling, or a persistent change in breast shape. Do not wait for a routine screening appointment if a new change is present. Mammography may be part of investigating breast cancer, but symptoms need clinical review whether or not a previous image was normal.
