What should you know about a FUE hair graft?

A follicular unit is a natural group of hairs that grows together. During FUE, the unit is extracted with a small punch, checked and prepared before insertion into a recipient opening. The clinician must balance coverage against donor supply and place grafts according to the angle and direction of nearby hair. A graft count alone cannot describe the final appearance because units may contain different numbers of hairs.

FUE may be considered for pattern loss or selected areas affected by traction, but the cause needs confirmation first. Receding hairlines and bald patches can have different explanations, and active inflammation or unstable loss may change the plan.

At consultation, discuss the diagnosis, donor density, hairline design, expected density and how future thinning could affect the result. Share medicines, allergies, scalp symptoms and prior procedures. After treatment, follow instructions for washing and sleeping, protect grafts from friction and sun, and avoid picking crusts or returning to strenuous activity before clearance. Keep follow-up appointments so healing and native hair can be reviewed.

Contact the clinic for persistent bleeding, worsening pain, increasing warmth or redness, pus, fever, or swelling that is spreading. New smooth patches, heavy scale, intense itching or rapid loss outside the treated area should also be assessed because they may point to another scalp problem. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or severe facial swelling.

Ask how the donor area will be protected, how grafts are selected and stored, how the hairline will be designed, what native hair may need later treatment, and whether PRP or scalp micropigmentation is relevant to your goals.
