What to expect with frozen embryo transfer

The clinic prepares the womb lining in a natural, modified natural, or hormone-prepared cycle. The laboratory thaws the selected embryo according to the treatment plan. A clinician then passes a thin catheter through the cervix and places the embryo in the womb. The procedure is usually brief, although the exact experience varies.

You may notice pressure, mild cramping, or light spotting afterward. These sensations can also occur from the catheter or medicines and do not confirm the result. The embryo does not fall out because you stand, walk, cough, or use the toilet.

Take medicines at the prescribed times and attend monitoring appointments. On the day, follow instructions about arrival, bladder preparation, food, and transport. After transfer, use medicines as directed, drink normally, and choose comfortable activity. Avoid changing treatment because of early symptoms or the absence of symptoms.

Keep the pregnancy-test appointment even if you have bleeding or cramps, unless the clinic gives different instructions. Ask before taking new medicines, including over-the-counter products or supplements.

Contact the clinic for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pain, fever, faintness, breathing difficulty, or significant abdominal swelling. Seek emergency help if you collapse, have severe shortness of breath, or feel acutely unwell. Mention the transfer date and all medicines when you call.

Ask how your cycle will be prepared, whether any sedation is planned, what sensations are expected, when normal activities can resume, and which medicines to continue. Confirm the pregnancy-test date and the clinic’s contact route outside appointment hours.
