What should you know about frothy sputum heart failure?

Frothy sputum may signal fluid in the lungs and needs urgent assessment when paired with breathlessness or heart symptoms. Heart failure can cause congestion that makes breathing harder, often worse when lying flat. Froth or pink colouring is not enough to confirm heart failure, because infections and airway irritation can look similar.

Heart failure means the heart is not moving blood as effectively as the body needs. Pressure can build behind the heart and encourage fluid to move into lung tissue, causing cough, breathlessness, wheeze, or frothy mucus. Swollen ankles, fatigue, or a racing and irregular heartbeat can add useful context. High blood pressure and atrial fibrillation can affect heart function, but a clinician must assess the whole pattern rather than rely on one symptom.

If this is new, contact a clinician promptly and describe the sputum, breathing position, ankle swelling, weight change if known, and any missed heart medicines. Take prescribed medicines as directed; do not alter diuretics or restrict fluids without medical advice. Sit upright and avoid exertion while waiting for help.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, inability to speak comfortably, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, severe chest pressure, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Urgent help is also needed if frothy or pink sputum appears with marked breathing difficulty. Do not drive if you feel faint or cannot breathe normally.
