What should you know about frontal plane gait analysis?

Short answer

Frontal plane gait analysis examines side-to-side movement of the pelvis, hips, knees, and feet during walking or running.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it measures

The frontal plane is the view that shows movement from side to side. During gait analysis, a clinician may look for pelvic drop, the knee moving inward or outward, trunk sway, hip control, and how the foot moves relative to the leg. The review considers the whole movement pattern rather than labelling one position as a diagnosis.

A walking or running assessment may combine video, physical examination, and instrumented measurements. [3D Motion Capture](/technology/3d-motion-capture/) can record joint movement from several angles, while a [Pressure Plate Gait Scanner](/technology/pressure-plate-gait-scanner/) can show where pressure is applied under the feet. Results are interpreted alongside symptoms, strength, flexibility, footwear, and activity goals.

How to prepare and use the result

Wear comfortable clothing and bring the shoes you normally use for the activity being assessed. Tell the clinician about pain, previous injuries, neurological symptoms, exercise habits, and any change in walking distance. The assessment may be repeated after exercises, footwear changes, or a rehabilitation programme to see whether movement control changes.

A finding is useful when it leads to a practical plan, such as strengthening a specific muscle group, practising balance, changing training load, or considering [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/) when foot mechanics contribute to the problem. An analysis does not replace a medical diagnosis.

When to seek care

Arrange clinical assessment for new or worsening pain, repeated falls, a limp that persists, numbness, weakness, or difficulty placing the foot safely. Seek urgent help for sudden one-sided weakness, loss of balance with speech or vision changes, or inability to bear weight after an injury. A gait test should be postponed when severe pain makes normal walking unsafe.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which movement finding may relate to your symptoms, whether the test should include walking, running, or stairs, and how reliable the result is when pain changes your pattern. Ask what exercise, footwear, or follow-up measurement would show that the treatment plan is helping.

Questions people ask

Is frontal plane gait analysis painful?

The test is usually based on walking or running, but pain may appear if the activity aggravates an existing problem. Tell the clinician immediately if that happens.

Does an unusual gait finding prove an injury?

No. It is one piece of information that must be interpreted with symptoms, examination findings, and medical history.
