What should you know about a front-of-neck lump?

The front of the neck contains the thyroid gland, windpipe, muscles, salivary tissues, and lymph nodes. A lump may follow an infection, reflect a thyroid nodule or cyst, or arise from another benign growth. Thyroid cancer, lymphoma, head and neck cancer, and cancer of unknown primary can also present with a neck lump, but a lump does not by itself identify cancer.

Notice whether it is painful, tender, firm, mobile, growing, or associated with voice change, swallowing difficulty, fever, or night sweats. These details help determine which examination or scan is appropriate.

Book a clinical assessment for a lump that persists, enlarges, feels hard or fixed, or returns after an infection. Record when you first noticed it and whether its size changes. Bring medicine details and mention recent infections, dental problems, tobacco or alcohol exposure, and family thyroid history.

Assessment may include examination, blood tests, ultrasound, or a needle sample. If a thyroid problem is confirmed, treatment varies; thyroid removal surgery is considered only when the clinical findings support it.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, blue lips, or severe allergic symptoms. Arrange prompt review for a lump with persistent hoarseness, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, or worsening swallowing difficulty.
