Front headache: what to know

Short answer
Front headache is a symptom with several possible explanations, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pattern
- Pressure, throbbing, duration and triggers help describe a headache.
- Associated symptoms
- Fever, nasal symptoms, dizziness or neurological changes alter urgency.
How to interpret it
A steady pressure across the front of the head may occur with tension, eye strain, jaw clenching, stress or poor posture. Nasal blockage, sneezing, facial pressure or reduced smell can accompany allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis or a common cold. COVID-19 may include headache alongside infectious symptoms.
Not drinking enough, becoming overheated or feeling persistently anxious can also contribute. Dehydration and heat exhaustion are more concerning when headache comes with thirst, dizziness, weakness or heavy sweating. The location of pain does not identify its cause on its own.
Steps that may help
Pause strenuous activity, move to a cool or quiet place, drink fluids gradually and eat if you have skipped a meal. Relax your jaw and neck, reduce glare and take regular screen breaks. Write down when the pain starts, what it feels like, possible triggers, associated symptoms and any medicine taken.
Follow label directions for any over-the-counter pain medicine and seek advice if you need it often. A clinician can check your neurological function, eyes, neck, sinuses and general health when headaches keep returning or affect daily life.
Get urgent help when
Seek emergency care for a sudden, severe headache; new weakness, numbness, speech difficulty, confusion or a seizure; repeated vomiting; or a headache after a significant head injury. Fever with a stiff neck, fainting, vision loss or rapidly worsening pain also needs prompt assessment.
Questions to bring
What features of my headache suggest tension, infection, heat or dehydration? Do I need an examination or tests? Which pain medicines are suitable, and what symptoms should make me seek urgent care?
