Fresh Bleeding After Sex: What to Know

Friction, vaginal dryness, a small surface tear, or inflammation can cause blood after penetration. An infection such as Chlamydia may also cause bleeding, sometimes with unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain when passing urine.

Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can present with bleeding after sex, although this symptom does not identify the cause by itself. Less commonly, bleeding may arise from the vaginal tissues. A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix and arrange swabs or other tests based on your history.

Arrange a medical appointment if the bleeding is unexplained, happens again, occurs after menopause, or comes with discharge, pain, or a new sexual partner. Note when it started, how much blood you saw, whether penetration was painful, and whether pregnancy is possible.

Avoid putting anything into the vagina if bleeding or pain continues until you have advice. Do not self-treat a suspected infection with leftover medicine. An examination can distinguish irritation from cervical or vaginal conditions and guide treatment.

Seek urgent care for heavy or persistent bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or feeling very unwell. If you could be pregnant, bleeding with pain or dizziness needs prompt assessment because an ectopic pregnancy must be considered.

Ask whether you need an examination, infection testing, cervical screening review, or referral. You can ask what findings would lead to a biopsy such as a cone biopsy, how long results may take, and what sexual activity is suitable while symptoms are being investigated.
