What should you know about frequent stye causes?

A stye is a tender, localised swelling near an eyelash or within an eyelid. It can develop when an eyelid gland or lash follicle becomes blocked and inflamed. Previous styes, eyelid irritation, touching the eyes with unwashed hands, and residual eye make-up can contribute to recurrence. A firm, less tender lump may be a different type of blocked gland rather than an active stye. Eye discharge or a red eye can point to another eye problem and may need separate assessment.

Apply a clean, comfortably warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating it through the day, and keep the cloth clean. Do not squeeze, pierce, or rub the lump. Pause contact lenses and eye make-up until the eye is comfortable and clean. Wash hands before touching the eyelids, replace old eye products, and avoid sharing towels. A GP consultation can help when styes return, do not settle, or the diagnosis is uncertain.

Seek prompt medical care for reduced vision, pain with moving the eye, marked swelling around the eye, fever, or redness spreading beyond the eyelid. Arrange assessment for a lump that keeps returning in the same place, changes appearance, or does not improve. Urgency is guided by vision changes, pain, and spreading inflammation rather than by the mere presence of a stye.

Ask whether the lump is an active stye, a blocked gland, or another cause; whether your eyelid edges need treatment; and which eye products or lens habits may be aggravating the problem. Ask when persistent eye discharge or a red eye needs review.
