What should you know about frequent earwax buildup?

Earwax protects the canal and normally moves outward. Narrow ear canals, skin conditions, hearing aids, and frequent use of earbuds can make wax collect. A blocked canal may cause muffled hearing, pressure, itching, ringing in the ears, or earache. These symptoms can also have other causes, so looking inside the ear matters; hearing loss is not automatically due to wax.

A clinician can check whether the eardrum is visible and whether infection, trapped water, or another problem is present. Mention previous ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, or pain before using drops or arranging removal.

Keep objects, cotton buds, and hairpins out of the ear canal; they can push wax deeper or injure the skin. Wipe only the outer ear. If a clinician or pharmacist says drops are suitable, use them as directed to soften wax. Hearing aids and earbuds should be cleaned according to their instructions. Do not pour water into the ear if you have a perforated eardrum or ear surgery without medical advice.

Arrange a review for repeated blockage, new hearing loss, persistent ringing, discharge, dizziness, or pain. Seek urgent care for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, or severe pain with fever.
