Short answer

Frequent burping and gas commonly reflect swallowed air, fermentation in the bowel or a food-related sensitivity.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Where the gas comes from

Burping releases air swallowed during eating, drinking, talking or chewing gum. Intestinal gas forms when gut bacteria break down carbohydrates that were not fully absorbed. Milk products may trigger symptoms in lactose intolerance; other foods can cause food intolerance without a classic allergy. Bloating, altered stools and cramping can occur with irritable bowel syndrome. Persistent diarrhoea after unsafe water or travel raises different questions, including giardiasis. Coeliac disease and Helicobacter pylori infection also need medical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Reduce discomfort safely

Slow meals, chew thoroughly, limit fizzy drinks and notice whether gum, smoking or drinking through a straw increases air swallowing. Keep a brief food-and-symptom diary, changing one suspected trigger at a time. Avoid removing many foods without professional guidance; nutrition counselling can help maintain a balanced diet while testing a suspected intolerance. Gentle movement may help gas pass.

When assessment matters

Arrange medical review for persistent or worsening symptoms, ongoing diarrhoea or constipation, night-time symptoms, anaemia, fatigue, weight loss or blood in stool. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a markedly swollen abdomen, faintness or inability to pass stool and gas.

Questions to take along

Could my symptoms fit lactose intolerance, another food intolerance or irritable bowel syndrome? Should I be tested for coeliac disease or Helicobacter pylori? How can I change my diet without missing essential nutrients?

Questions people ask

Should I cut out dairy immediately?

Only if a clinician or dietitian supports a structured trial; removing foods without a plan can make nutrition harder.

Can gas with weight loss be ignored?

No. Weight loss, bleeding, anaemia or persistent bowel change warrants medical review.
