What should you know about freezing off a keloid?

A keloid is raised scar tissue that extends beyond the original injury and may itch, feel tender or remain firm. Cryotherapy cools the scar and can damage excess scar cells, sometimes making the area flatter or softer. Treatment can be uncomfortable and may produce swelling, blistering, a pale or darker patch, or a sore that needs wound care. A keloid may return after treatment, particularly when the original trigger and healing tendency remain.

Have the scar examined before freezing, especially if it is growing, bleeding, ulcerated or not clearly linked to an injury. Tell the clinician about your skin tone, previous scars, acne or piercing history, and earlier treatments. Steroid injections into the skin, laser treatment or surgery may be considered alone or in combination, depending on thickness, symptoms and location. Avoid treating a suspected keloid at home.

Arrange review for a scar that expands beyond a wound, becomes painful, restricts movement or causes persistent itch. Seek prompt care for rapid change, bleeding, an open surface or signs of infection such as warmth, spreading redness, discharge or fever. After freezing, report severe pain, tissue breakdown or delayed healing.

Ask whether the lump is a keloid or another scar type, what result is realistic, how pigment changes will be managed, and whether combination treatment could lower the chance of regrowth.
