What should you know about free tuberculosis testing?

Tuberculosis Screening may use a skin test or a blood test to look for an immune response to tuberculosis bacteria. A positive result does not by itself prove active disease; a clinician may ask about exposure, previous vaccination, immune health, and symptoms, then arrange further tests. A Chest X-Ray can look for changes in the lungs, while sputum testing may be considered when lung tuberculosis is suspected. Ask the testing service which test is being offered, how results will be reported, and whether you must return for a reading or follow-up. Give an accurate history of contact with tuberculosis, travel or residence in areas where it is common, previous treatment, vaccination, and immune-suppressing medicines. Keep the appointment for any recommended imaging or laboratory testing. If you have symptoms, avoid close indoor contact until a clinician advises you, especially around infants or people with weakened immunity.

Arrange prompt medical review for a cough that persists, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, marked tiredness, or swollen glands. Seek urgent help for coughing blood, severe breathlessness, confusion, or sudden deterioration. Symptoms do not confirm tuberculosis, but they should not be left for screening alone to address.
