Freckles on chest from sun: what to know

Freckles, also called ephelides, form when pigment-producing cells make more melanin in response to ultraviolet light. They may be tan, light brown, or darker brown, and often become more noticeable after time outdoors. The upper chest is commonly exposed by open collars, swimwear, and sports clothing. Freckles can fade when ultraviolet exposure decreases, while other sun-related marks may remain visible. A photograph can help you notice whether one mark is changing, but it cannot identify a suspicious lesion.

Cover the chest with clothing when practical and use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin, reapplying after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. Avoid picking, bleaching, or using harsh home acids on a pigmented spot. A dermatologist can distinguish freckles from lentigines, moles, irritation-related pigment, or another lesion.
