What should you know about freckles on ankles?

Freckles can occur on any skin exposed to sunlight, including the lower legs and ankles. Their usual appearance is a small, flat, tan or brown spot with fairly even colour. The ankle area can also develop darkening after bites, scratches, healing rashes, or repeated rubbing from footwear. Marks near the feet may be harder to monitor because socks and shoes cover them, so compare them occasionally in good light and note changes without repeatedly rubbing the skin.

Use sunscreen on exposed ankles and reduce rubbing from tight straps or rough footwear. Keep the surrounding skin moisturised if it is dry, and avoid picking at scabs or applying bleaching products without advice.
