Freckles on the Arms

Forearms and shoulders receive repeated sunlight, so freckles may become more visible there, especially during periods of outdoor activity. They are generally flat and may occur in clusters, with colour ranging from light tan to brown. Freckles can look similar to sun spots, post-inflammatory marks, or other lesions. Location alone does not establish the diagnosis; a clinician considers the spot's borders, surface, colour pattern, and history.

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to the arms when they are uncovered and reapply as directed. Long sleeves, shade, and avoiding intentional tanning reduce repeated ultraviolet stimulation. Treatment should be planned around your skin tone, tanning history, and tendency to develop lingering pigment after irritation.

Arrange an examination if one arm spot is unlike the others, changes in outline, shade, or size, becomes raised, bleeds, crusts, hurts, or remains itchy. A sore that does not heal also needs assessment. Do not remove or burn a spot at home, since this can injure skin and make later evaluation harder.
