What should you know about fractional stretch mark removal?

Short answer
Fractional stretch mark treatment uses controlled microscopic injuries or heat to soften the texture and contrast of stretch marks over time.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Treatment goal
- Soften appearance and texture rather than erase the mark
- Approaches
- Fractional laser, RF microneedling, or microneedling may be considered
- Key variables
- Mark age, colour, depth, location, and skin tone
Why treatment varies
Stretch marks form when skin is stretched and supporting fibres change. Newer marks may be red, purple, or darker, while older marks are often pale and indented. Fractional laser treatment creates small columns that encourage remodeling; RF microneedling combines needle channels with heat. Microneedling uses mechanical channels without the same radiofrequency delivery. These approaches can improve visibility and texture, but the response varies and the mark may remain detectable.
The clinician should assess the mark's colour, depth, location, skin tone, pregnancy or weight-change history, and any steroid exposure. Active infection, irritated skin, or a tendency to form raised scars can change the plan.
Making a sensible treatment plan
Ask which method fits the type of stretch mark and whether colour treatment should come before texture treatment. Follow instructions about sun avoidance, shaving, skincare, and medicines before the appointment. Afterward, cleanse gently, use the recommended bland moisturizer, avoid picking, and protect the area from sun. Pause exfoliants, retinoids, hot baths, swimming, and friction until the skin has recovered. Several appointments may be discussed, with spacing based on healing rather than a fixed schedule.
When to seek care
Ask the clinic to review increasing pain, heat, swelling, pus, blisters, fever, or redness that spreads beyond the treated area. Report persistent darkening, lightening, thickening, or a new raised scar. Urgent care is appropriate for rapidly spreading swelling, severe illness, or breathing difficulty after a treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Are my marks newer or older, and does their colour affect the treatment choice? Which approach targets texture, what recovery should I expect, and how will you reduce pigment or scarring risk for my skin tone?

Questions people ask
Can fractional treatment completely remove stretch marks?
Treatment may make them less noticeable, but a stretch mark can remain visible after healing.
Are red and pale stretch marks treated in the same way?
Not always. Colour, age, depth, and skin tone help determine the suitable approach and settings.
