Fractional CO2 laser for scars: what to know

Scars can be depressed, raised, firm, itchy, tight, darker, lighter, or uneven. Fractional CO2 laser uses narrow columns of heat to remove or disrupt tiny portions of the surface while surrounding skin remains available for repair. That process can soften edges and improve texture over time.

A scar’s cause and behaviour matter. Surgical scars, injury scars, acne scars, burns, hypertrophic scars, and keloids do not have the same treatment needs. A raised scar that grows beyond its original wound may need specialist scar control before resurfacing is considered.

At consultation, describe when the scar formed, whether it is changing, and any previous reactions to procedures. Mention eczema, active breakouts, infections, cold sores, medicines, and a history of post-inflammatory pigment change. The clinician may recommend postponing treatment until the skin is calm.

Healing commonly involves redness, swelling, tenderness, and a dry or crusted surface. Use the cleanser, ointment, dressing, and sunscreen recommended for your treatment. Avoid picking, swimming, strong heat, and unapproved exfoliants until the skin barrier has recovered.

Ask the clinic to review increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, worsening swelling, fever, or a wound that is not healing as expected. Emergency help is appropriate for breathing difficulty, severe allergic swelling, or vision changes.
