Fractional CO2 laser for a scar: what to know

The device delivers CO2 laser energy in a fractional pattern, leaving untreated skin between microscopic treatment columns. This can encourage repair and improve an uneven surface. A scar may become smoother or more flexible, but laser does not recreate normal skin or guarantee a particular appearance.

The clinician considers whether the scar is depressed, raised, tight, discoloured, recently healed, or still changing. Different scar features may need different treatments, and active acne, infection, dermatitis, or poor healing can change the timing.

Before treatment, disclose medicines, allergies, cold-sore history, recent tanning, and previous procedures. Ask for a clear plan for numbing, cleansing, dressings, and sun protection. Take photographs in consistent lighting if you want to compare gradual changes.

Redness, swelling, heat, sensitivity, and a rough or crusted surface can occur during healing. Wash only as instructed, keep the area protected, avoid picking, and restart active skin products only when the clinician says the barrier has recovered. Improvement may develop gradually and may require more than one visit.

Call the clinic if discomfort is worsening, redness spreads, blisters appear, or the area develops pus, increasing warmth, or an unpleasant smell. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, severe facial swelling, or eye symptoms after treatment.

Ask which scar features are being targeted, whether another treatment is more suitable, how pigment changes will be reduced, and what daily care is expected during healing.
