Fractional CO2 laser for hypertrophic scars: what to know

A hypertrophic scar is raised but generally stays within the original wound outline. Fractional CO2 laser creates tiny columns of controlled heat in the scar and nearby skin. The treated skin repairs itself, which may improve texture, firmness, and movement when a scar feels tight. It does not erase scar tissue, and a raised scar may need a combined plan such as silicone care, steroid treatment, or other scar therapy.

The colour and thickness of the scar, its age, location, skin tone, tendency to heal with excess pigment, and any active inflammation all affect the decision. A clinician should distinguish a hypertrophic scar from a keloid before choosing settings.

During consultation, share previous scar treatments, medicines that affect healing, a history of cold sores, and any tendency to develop dark or light marks after skin injury. Follow the clinic’s instructions about sun exposure and topical products before treatment.

Afterward, expect redness, warmth, swelling, sensitivity, and small crusted areas while the skin heals. Cleanse gently, use only the recommended dressing or ointment, avoid picking, and protect the area from sunlight once advised. Keep follow-up appointments so settings and timing can be adjusted safely.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain or swelling is increasing rather than settling, redness is spreading, the area feels unusually hot, or drainage develops. Seek urgent medical care for facial swelling affecting breathing or vision, a severe allergic reaction, or fever with rapidly worsening skin changes.
