What should you know about Fotona Nd:YAG laser?

Nd:YAG describes the laser crystal and its commonly used 1064 nanometre wavelength; Fotona describes the platform. This wavelength can reach relatively deeply and is often selected when the clinician wants to target tissue beneath the surface. Pulse duration, spot size, cooling, and energy determine how the skin responds.

The same platform may be configured for different goals, including laser hair removal or treatment of a nail affected by fungus. Those procedures are not interchangeable: the target, settings, number of visits, and aftercare differ. A diagnosis is needed before treating a nail or skin problem.

Tell the clinician about tanning, medicines, scars, circulation problems, active infection, pigment changes, and previous laser reactions. For hair treatment, explain whether you wax or pluck; for a nail concern, mention trauma, diabetes, or other nail changes that may need examination.

Follow instructions about shaving, sun avoidance, cooling, and keeping the treated area clean. Do not pick blisters or apply harsh products without advice. If a nail is being treated, follow the prescribed hygiene and footwear routine and attend any planned review, because appearance alone may not identify the cause.

Ask for prompt assessment if pain increases, blisters or open areas develop, redness spreads, drainage appears, or treated skin changes markedly in colour. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, severe swelling, or eye symptoms. A clinician can decide whether this is expected irritation or a treatment reaction needing care.

Ask which Nd:YAG mode is planned, what tissue is being targeted, why this wavelength fits your skin or hair, how the risk of burns or pigment change is reduced, what aftercare is required, and how progress will be judged.
