Short answer

A formula for constipation should start with fluids, gradual fibre, movement and a review of medicines, with medical advice if symptoms persist or warning signs appear.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Start with
Regular fluids, gradual fibre and daily movement
Review
Medicines, supplements and bowel habits
Do not ignore
Severe pain, vomiting, bleeding or inability to pass gas

What constipation can mean

Constipation may involve hard stools, straining, fewer bowel movements than usual or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied. Common contributors include low fluid intake, little dietary fibre, reduced activity, changes in routine and medicines such as some painkillers. Dehydration can make stools drier. Constipation can also occur alongside irritable bowel syndrome, hypothyroidism or diverticular disease, but the symptom alone does not identify a cause.

A sensible routine

Drink regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. Add fibre slowly through vegetables, fruit, beans, oats or whole grains, because a sudden increase can cause bloating. Walking and responding to the urge to open your bowels may help. Review supplements and medicines with a pharmacist or clinician before changing them. Nutrition Counselling can help you build a plan around your usual meals. A pharmacist can explain whether a bulk-forming, osmotic or stimulant laxative fits your situation and how long to use it.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if constipation keeps returning, has not improved with self-care, or began after a medicine change. Seek urgent help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, black or bloody stool, fever, or unexplained weight loss. New constipation in an older adult or a marked change from your usual bowel pattern also deserves assessment.

Questions to ask

Could a medicine, thyroid problem or bowel condition be contributing? Which laxative is suitable for me, and when should I stop it? How much fibre and fluid is appropriate with my other health conditions? What changes should prompt a follow-up visit?
