Foot freckles: what to know about dark spots

Freckles are usually flat and light to medium brown, with colour that may become more noticeable after sun exposure. Spots on the top of the foot can receive ultraviolet light in sandals or open footwear. A mark on the sole or between toes may have a different explanation, including a mole or another pigmented lesion. Appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis, so a clinician may inspect the pattern, border, colour and evolution with magnification.

Protect exposed feet with shade, footwear and broad-spectrum sunscreen applied as directed on exposed skin. Avoid picking, bleaching products and unregulated lightening creams, which can irritate the area and make colour changes harder to judge. Photograph a spot in consistent lighting if you want to track change, and arrange an assessment before considering cosmetic treatment.

Book a dermatology review for a new spot, a mark that changes in size, shape or colour, or one that becomes itchy, tender, crusted or bleeding. Seek earlier advice when a spot looks unlike your other marks or has an irregular edge. After diagnosis, options such as an IPL photofacial or picosecond laser treatment may be discussed for suitable cosmetic pigment, but they are not substitutes for diagnosis.
