Short answer

Foot curve pain can come from strain in the arch, tendon irritation, altered foot shape, or an injury that needs assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pain pattern
Notice whether it is under the arch, on the inner side, or focused in one spot.
First step
Reduce the provoking load and use comfortable supportive footwear.
Assessment
Persistent, activity-limiting, or injury-related pain should be checked.

Why the arch may hurt

Pain underneath the arch is often linked with load on the plantar fascia, while pain on the inner side may involve tissues that help support the arch. Flat feet can change how force travels through the foot. A bunion, hammer toe, or stiff big-toe joint can shift pressure elsewhere during walking. Gradual pain after more walking, running, or standing differs from pain after a twist or direct impact. A stress fracture can cause focused tenderness that worsens with activity.

The symptom alone cannot identify one cause. A clinician may examine your walking pattern, footwear, joint movement, strength, and tender areas before deciding whether imaging or other tests are useful.

Reduce strain safely

For a recent mild flare, reduce the activity that provokes the pain and choose supportive, comfortable shoes. Avoid suddenly returning to long walks or intense exercise. Gentle calf and foot mobility may be suitable, but stop if it increases sharp pain. Ice wrapped in cloth can be used briefly if it feels helpful. Custom orthotics may be considered when foot mechanics and symptoms suggest that added support could help; they should complement, not replace, an assessment when pain persists.

When assessment is important

Arrange medical assessment if pain persists, returns repeatedly, or changes the way you walk. Seek prompt care after an injury if you cannot bear weight, there is marked swelling or bruising, or the foot looks misshapen. Rapidly increasing pain, numbness, colour change, warmth with fever, or an open wound needs urgent attention.

Useful questions

Ask which structure may be painful, whether your footwear or training load is contributing, and which activities are safe while symptoms settle. Ask whether you need imaging, a temporary support, or a progressive exercise plan.

Questions people ask

Can flat feet cause arch pain?

Flat feet can alter how force passes through the foot and may contribute to arch or inner-foot discomfort, although other causes are possible.

Should I keep exercising with arch pain?

Avoid the activity that clearly worsens the pain and seek advice before returning to higher loads.
