Short answer

Fibre-rich foods, regular fluids, and gentle activity can soften stools and help relieve constipation during pregnancy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be behind the symptom

Hormonal changes can slow bowel movement during pregnancy. Iron supplements, less activity, nausea, and pressure from the uterus may contribute as well. Constipation can mean hard stools, straining, or a change from your usual bowel pattern. Try food-based changes first when symptoms are mild, but remember that constipation is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. The [Constipation](/symptoms/constipation/) page explains the symptom in more detail.

Food choices and a gentle routine

Include oats, wholegrain cereals, beans, lentils, vegetables, fruit, and nuts across the day. Prunes or kiwi may help some people. Increase fibre in stages and drink fluids regularly so extra fibre does not make stools harder. A short walk or other pregnancy-approved movement may support bowel function. Do not stop prescribed iron or use laxatives, supplements, or herbal products without advice from your maternity team. Nutrition counselling can help if sickness, diabetes, or food intolerance limits your choices.

When to get medical advice

Speak with your maternity clinician if constipation persists, keeps returning, or follows a change in iron treatment. Seek prompt care for severe or increasing abdominal pain, vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, fever, blood in stool, or faintness. Strong thirst, very dark urine, or passing much less urine may suggest [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/). Persistent symptoms may need assessment for issues such as [Hypothyroidism](/conditions/hypothyroidism/) or [Irritable Bowel Syndrome](/conditions/irritable-bowel-syndrome/).

Useful questions

Could my iron supplement be worsening the constipation? Which stool-softening treatment is suitable in pregnancy? How much fluid should I drink with my health history? Would [Nutrition Counselling](/treatments/lifestyle-and-wellness/nutrition-counselling/) help me plan balanced meals?
