Short answer

Choose fibre-rich foods, drink fluids regularly, and increase fibre gradually to help prevent constipation during pregnancy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why food choices can help

Pregnancy hormones can slow movement through the bowel, while iron supplements, reduced activity, nausea, or pressure from the growing uterus may add to the problem. Fibre holds water in stool and adds bulk, which can make bowel movements easier. Good sources include oats, wholegrain bread, brown rice, beans, lentils, vegetables, fruit, and nuts. Prunes or prune juice may help some people, but tolerance differs.

Constipation means stools are hard, difficult to pass, or less frequent than usual. It is a symptom, and it does not by itself identify a separate condition. Read more about [Constipation](/symptoms/constipation/).

Useful habits at mealtimes

Add one fibre-rich food to each meal and make changes over several days rather than suddenly eating large amounts. Sip water through the day, unless your maternity team has advised fluid restriction. Gentle walking, if permitted in your pregnancy, can also encourage bowel movement. Do not stop prescribed iron or start a laxative, herbal product, or fibre supplement without checking with your midwife, obstetrician, or pharmacist. A nutrition counsellor can help adapt choices if nausea, diabetes, or food intolerance affects your diet.

When to contact a clinician

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, blood in the stool, fever, or faintness. Contact your maternity team if constipation continues despite dietary changes or if an iron supplement seems to be causing it; they can review the dose or formulation safely. Reduced urination, very dark urine, or marked thirst can occur with [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/).

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Could my iron supplement be contributing to constipation? Is a fibre supplement or stool softener suitable for me? How much fluid is appropriate with my pregnancy and medical history? Could symptoms suggest [Hypothyroidism](/conditions/hypothyroidism/) or [Irritable Bowel Syndrome](/conditions/irritable-bowel-syndrome/)?

Questions people ask

Can I use prunes during pregnancy?

Prunes or prune juice may be suitable for many people, but introduce them gradually and discuss persistent symptoms with your maternity clinician.

Should I stop iron tablets if they constipate me?

No. Ask your maternity clinician about a different formulation or dose rather than stopping prescribed iron yourself.
