Foods to help pregnancy constipation

Short answer
During pregnancy, gradually add fibre-rich foods, drink regularly, and move gently to support easier bowel movements.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Increase gradually
- Build fibre step by step to reduce bloating
- Helpful movement
- Gentle pregnancy-safe activity can support bowel function
Why bowel movements may change
Hormonal changes can slow the bowel during pregnancy. Growing pressure in the abdomen, reduced activity, and iron supplements may also contribute. Constipation can mean hard stools, straining, or passing stool less often than is normal for you. It does not mean you should stop a prescribed supplement without advice.
Build a gentler routine
Add oats, wholegrain bread, brown rice, lentils, beans, vegetables, fruit with edible skin, and ground linseed if your clinician agrees. Increase fibre gradually and drink water regularly so the extra fibre can work comfortably. A short walk or other pregnancy-safe movement may stimulate the bowel. Respond to the urge, allow unhurried toilet time, and use a footstool to keep your knees slightly raised. If food and routine changes are not enough, ask about a pregnancy-suitable laxative rather than self-treating.
When to seek care
Speak with your maternity clinician if constipation persists, becomes painful, or starts after a medicine or supplement. Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, blood in the stool, or inability to pass gas and stool. Marked thirst, dizziness, or very dark urine may point to dehydration and also needs attention.
Questions for your doctor
Could my iron supplement be contributing, and is a change appropriate? How much fibre and fluid suits me? Would nutrition counselling or a medicine be safe in my pregnancy?

Questions people ask
Are prunes suitable during pregnancy?
Prunes and prune juice can help some people because they provide fibre and natural sugars, but introduce them gradually and watch for loose stools or bloating.
Can I take a laxative?
Some laxatives may be used in pregnancy, but the right choice depends on your symptoms and health. Ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist before taking one.
