Which foods may worsen GERD?
Triggers differ between people, so removing every food at once can make meals unnecessarily restrictive. A short food-and-symptom diary can help you spot a pattern.
How food affects reflux
GERD happens when stomach contents move back into the oesophagus and irritate its lining. Large or high-fat meals may stay in the stomach longer, while certain foods and drinks can make burning or regurgitation more noticeable. Tomatoes, citrus, fizzy drinks, mint, onions, and garlic are also common personal triggers, but they do not affect everyone.
Reflux can be more troublesome after lying down. Symptoms may include heartburn, a sour taste, throat irritation, or a cough. Night-time symptoms can disturb sleep; persistent symptoms may overlap with conditions such as chronic cough or a hiatus hernia.
Practical changes to try
Choose smaller meals, eat slowly, and avoid lying down soon after eating. Keep an evening meal comfortably before bedtime, and raise the head end of the bed if symptoms regularly wake you. Water can be a useful replacement for drinks that repeatedly trigger symptoms.
Change one suspected trigger at a time and record what you ate, when symptoms appeared, and whether you were lying down. If symptoms settle, reintroduce foods gradually rather than assuming that every item in a broad food group must be avoided. A clinician or dietitian can help you keep your diet balanced.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a medical review if reflux is frequent, keeps returning despite changes, or requires repeated self-treatment. Seek prompt care for food sticking, painful swallowing, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, or ongoing abdominal pain.
Chest tightness or chest pain should not automatically be attributed to GERD. Get urgent help for sudden or severe chest symptoms, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which symptoms fit reflux, whether another condition could be contributing, and how long to try meal changes before review. You can also ask whether your medicines may worsen reflux, whether testing is needed, and how to use any recommended treatment safely.

Questions people ask
Do I need to avoid all acidic foods with GERD?
No. Acidic foods are triggers for some people, but not everyone. Track your own symptoms and limit foods that repeatedly cause problems.
Can I drink coffee if I have GERD?
Coffee can worsen symptoms for some people. Try reducing it or switching to a non-caffeinated option and note whether your symptoms change.
Why is GERD worse at night?
Lying down after eating can make it easier for stomach contents to move upwards. Earlier, smaller evening meals may help.
