Foods that cause constipation during pregnancy

Short answer
During pregnancy, constipation can worsen with low fibre, too little fluid, large amounts of processed food, or iron supplements, although hormones and pressure also contribute.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why bowel movements may change
Pregnancy hormones can slow movement through the bowel, and the growing uterus can add pressure as pregnancy progresses. Meals based mainly on refined grains, fast food, cheese, or other low-fibre choices may leave less stool bulk. Not drinking enough can make stool harder. Iron supplements may also contribute, but do not stop or change a pregnancy supplement without discussing it with the maternity team. Constipation means stools are hard, difficult to pass, or less frequent than is normal for you; it is not defined by a particular number of bowel movements.
Food and fluid steps
Build fibre gradually with vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils, oats, and wholegrain foods. Pair fibre with regular fluids, because a sudden fibre increase without enough fluid can worsen bloating or discomfort. Gentle daily movement, if approved for your pregnancy, can support bowel activity. Ask your midwife or doctor before using laxatives, herbal products, or enemas. A nutrition counsellor can help if nausea, dietary restrictions, or food aversions make balanced meals difficult.
When to seek medical care
Contact your maternity team if constipation is persistent, painful, or not improving with fluids, fibre, and movement. Seek prompt care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, blood in the stool, fever, or inability to pass stool and gas. Mention symptoms of dehydration, such as very dark urine, dizziness, or unusual weakness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how much fibre and fluid suit your pregnancy, whether your iron supplement can be adjusted, and which bowel medicines are considered suitable. Tell your clinician about thyroid disease, previous bowel problems, severe nausea, or medicines that may slow the bowel.

Questions people ask
Should I stop iron tablets if they cause constipation?
No. Speak with your maternity team first; they can review the preparation, dose, or another safe approach.
Can increasing fibre help during pregnancy?
Often, yes. Increase it gradually and drink suitable fluids to reduce the chance of extra bloating.
