Foods that can cause cloudy urine

A food’s pigments, minerals, or concentrated waste can briefly change how urine looks. Dehydration makes urine more concentrated, which may make it appear darker or less clear. Cloudiness can also come from crystals, mucus, blood, or pus, none of which can be diagnosed from appearance alone. A urinary tract infection may cause cloudy urine with burning, urgency, an unusual smell, or lower abdominal discomfort. A kidney infection can add fever, chills, back or side pain, nausea, or feeling unwell.

Notice whether the change follows a particular food, reduced fluid intake, or a new supplement, and whether it clears after normal hydration. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Do not rely on repeated visual checks if cloudiness persists or urinary symptoms appear. A healthcare professional can examine a urine sample and decide whether treatment is needed. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics, because they may be unsuitable and can complicate assessment.
