Short answer

During pregnancy, limit foods that replace fibre-rich choices, drink enough fluid, and build meals around vegetables, fruit, whole grains and beans.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Prescribed iron or other supplements.

Why constipation can happen

Pregnancy hormones can slow bowel movement, and the growing uterus can add pressure in the abdomen. Iron supplements, reduced activity, changes in routine and not drinking enough can add to the problem. Large amounts of highly processed food, refined grains, fast food and low-fibre snacks may leave less room for foods that support softer stools.

Constipation may mean hard or lumpy stools, straining, or passing stools less often than usual. It is not a reason to stop a prescribed supplement without advice. Some people also have constipation with Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Hypothyroidism, so persistent symptoms deserve a review.

Food and routine ideas

Increase fibre gradually with oats, wholemeal bread, brown rice, lentils, beans, vegetables, fruit and nuts if suitable for you. Pair fibre with regular fluids, because a sudden fibre increase without enough fluid can worsen bloating. Gentle walking, if your maternity team says it is appropriate, may support bowel movement. Allow time and privacy when you feel the urge, and avoid straining.

Ask your maternity clinician before using laxatives, herbal products or supplements. Nutrition Counselling can help adapt meals to nausea, diabetes, allergies or cultural preferences.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity team if constipation continues despite changes, or if an iron supplement seems to trigger it. Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, rectal bleeding, or symptoms of Dehydration such as faintness and very little urine.

Questions for your doctor

Could my iron supplement or another medicine be contributing? How much fibre and fluid suit my pregnancy? Is a pregnancy-safe stool softener appropriate? Do my symptoms suggest another condition or need examination?
